Salsa Dancing Etiquette

Posted by: nicoloco in The Flying Blog

PHEW, Now that was Nasty!

I remember one of my first Salsa club outings years ago after my first Salsa dance lesson.  I had always been comfortable moving across the dance floor, so finding out during the lesson that I get to dance with different ladies all through the night was a bonus.

This was great, truly truly great.  I always smile like a little boy when dancing, but on this one particular time, I did not. There was this one lady who was really sweet and lovely to look at.  She even followed exceptionally for a beginner and as I was about to get into the mix and twirl her around ........ a fierce smell hit my nostrils.  I brushed it off thinking it was temporary but no, it did not go away.

Now, that’s not to say that I don’t get sweaty and probably a little less than fresh when I’ve been dancing for hours and been throwing girls (gracefully) around the floor.  I probably do.  But there are some moment when I wished that I had the guts of Cosmo Kramer to help me out is certain situations.

Everyone loves a great dancer. But, as much as you may love that friend yours who you enjoy dancing with, that doesn’t mean you want to be dancing in a close hold with them if they’re lacking in the personal hygiene department. It’s not pleasant!

But here comes the resolution! Excitement! There are always ways to avoid the smell. Some of my personal must do’s before I go out Salsa Dancing:

-     Indoor plumbing (shower or Bath), play some Salsa tunes as you clean up.  Please remember, there will be some Bachata music playing, so don’t kill the moment for anyone

-    Indoor emergency plumbing (the sink inside any washroom)

-    Borrow/buy deodorant

-    Hand sanitizer – you may laugh, but it actually works amazingly well in a tight pinch, since it is, after all, an antibacterial!

Of course, if it’s your breath that is a tad less sweet than an angel, and you seem to have a group of friends who don’t carry mints or gum, you can do the following:

-      Suck on a lemon or lime

-      Drink lots of water

-      For the smokers, remember that your profession is becoming extinct, so please have some gum with you after you recharge
